Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, the northernmost wildlife sanctuary in Kerala, covers 55 square kilometers in the Western Ghats. Established in 1984, it is home to diverse wildlife including the Malabar Giant Squirrel, elephants, spotted deer, gaur, sambar, barking deer, Nilgiri Langur, leopard, and Jungle cat. The sanctuary also boasts a variety of butterfly species native to the Western Ghats and has a dedicated butterfly park. The temperature ranges from 21°C to 40°C, with an annual rainfall of approximately 300 mm.

The sanctuary features a watchtower offering panoramic views of the mountains and rivers. It is a prime destination for trekkers, with the Meenmutty Falls trek taking about four hours and typically requiring a guide. Aralam village is also home to the central State Farm, established in 1971.

Kottiyoor Temple, located in Kottiyoor, is a significant Shiva temple with historical ties to the Kattan dynasty of Puralimala, from which the name "Kotti-yoor" is derived. Commonly known as Vadakkeshwaram Temple, it is locally referred to as Ikkare Kottiyoor due to its location on the riverbank near Kottiyoor village, distinguishing it from a similar shrine on the opposite riverbank. It is also called Thruchherumana Kshetram. The temple is uniquely open only for 27 days during the Vysakha festival each year.
